A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) administers various types of anesthesia including general, monitored anesthesia care, and epidural analgesia under the supervision of a Medical Doctor Anesthesiologist. They are responsible for patient assessment, anesthesia preparation and administration, monitoring during procedures, and overseeing patient recovery post-procedure. The CRNA ensures effective sedation and pain management while maintaining communication for patient handoffs to ensure continuity of care.
Overview:
Under the direction of the MD Anesthesiologist (MDA), the CRNA is responsible for the administration of anesthetics and monitoring the anesthetized patient during surgical, endoscopic, obstetric, invasive and imaging procedures. Types of anesthesia include general anesthesia (inhalation and intravenous), monitored anesthesia care (MAC) and epidural analgesia. The CRNA cares for the patient before, during and after the procedure or surgery by a patient assessment, preparing and administering anesthesia to ensure proper sedation and pain management during the procedure or surgery and oversees patient recovery from anesthesia and communicates patient condition during handoff communication to receiving RN or next level of care.
