American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position in a Level II trauma hospital, requiring a current CA RN license and strong neuro critical care skills.
Responsibilities- Position is in a 20-bed Neuro ICU within an acute care hospital
- Handles neuro critical care cases such as CVA, ICB, neuro surgeries, craniotomies, and interventional radiology procedures
- Typical patient ratio is 1:1 to 1:2
- Uses Cerner EMR; familiarity is required
- 12-hour night shifts with every other weekend required
- First to float to other Sacramento facilities; mid-shift floats are rare but may occur
- Charge nurse available; does not typically take a patient load but assists with break relief
- Nurse aides serve as safety attendants (sitters)
- Ventilator management and telemetry/EKG interpretation are essential components of the role
- Hospitalist or intensivist always available in house
- Bedside report at shift change; shift starts at 6:45 pm
- Duties include specialized neuro critical care, monitoring and interpreting telemetry, and managing complex lines and drains
- Participate in a renowned stroke program and neuro center within a modern, state-of-the-art unit
- Rotating holiday coverage alongside core staff members is required
- Scrub color required is navy; undershirts may be navy, white, or black and scrub jackets must be navy
- Team includes an available charge nurse, nurse aides as sitters, respiratory therapy and pharmacy support 24/7
- One to two days of floor-specific orientation with a preceptor
- Travelers may not have been directly employed by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility in the past year, but those previously PRN with outside firms may be considered
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Active CA RN license in hand at the time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
- Current certifications required: ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum of 2 years of recent Neuro ICU experience preferred
- Ability to read and interpret EKG strips and manage ventilators
- Ability to float to other facilities as needed
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from the last 12 months and another supervisor or peer from the last 3 years
- Completion of a basic dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to acceptance; passing is mandatory for employment
- Passing sterile technique assessment for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes on the first day of orientation
