Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Cancer Institute Medical Oncology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center provides compassionate, high-quality nursing care to patients in an outpatient oncology setting. This role is responsible for conducting comprehensive patient assessments, administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive treatments, monitoring patient responses, and managing treatment-related side effects while ensuring patient safety and comfort. The RN collaborates closely with oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and the interdisciplinary care team to develop and implement individualized care plans, provide patient and family education on treatment regimens and symptom management, and support patients throughout their cancer journey.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and ongoing evaluations of oncology patients in an outpatient setting
- Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, and supportive medications in accordance with established protocols, safety standards, and physician orders
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and treatment-related side effects, initiating appropriate interventions and escalation of care when needed
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, medications, potential side effects, symptom management, and follow-up care
- Collaborate with oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate and deliver individualized patient care
- Ensure safe handling, preparation verification, and administration of hazardous drugs per oncology and institutional guidelines
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record, including assessments, treatments, patient education, and outcomes
- Support care coordination by assisting with scheduling, referrals, laboratory review, and continuity of care across the treatment plan
- Adhere to infection control, patient safety, and regulatory standards, including chemotherapy certification requirements
- Provide emotional support and advocacy for patients and families throughout the oncology treatment process
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) an accredited nursing program required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- If prepared at the associate degree in nursing level required to enroll in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date and completion within 4 years of hire date.
Experience
- Minimum of 1–2 years of prior experience in oncology, medical oncology, infusion services, or an outpatient clinical setting required.
- Experience administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and biotherapy strongly preferred (or willingness to obtain required training and competency upon hire)
- Demonstrated experience in patient assessment, care coordination, and patient education within a fast-paced clinical environment
- Strong ability to manage multiple patients, prioritize care, and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams
Licenses and Certifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Chemotherapy/Biotherapy administration certification required or to be obtained within an established timeframe after hire
- Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN®) preferred
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
This position has a hiring range of : USD $40.17 - USD $65.31 /Hr.
