American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical Short Stay/Observation Unit position, requiring a SC or compact RN license and at least 2 years of observation or surgical nursing experience.
Responsibilities- Work in a six-bay, 23-hour observation unit located within a surgery center's PACU, inside a large clinic
- Care for a diverse patient population including orthopedics (total joints, arthroscopy, hand, shoulder, elbow), interventional radiology, and GI procedures
- Staffing model typically includes two RNs and one PCT per shift, with occasional shifts staffed by one RN and one PCT
- Expected patient ratios are 1:3, with a maximum of 1:6
- Shift is three 12-hour nights, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM, with no Fridays, weekends, or holidays
- Possible floating to other observation units or days off if census is low
- Uses Epic EMR
- Roles include pre- and post-operative care, collaborating with surgeons, anesthesia, and OR nurses in a fast-paced environment
- First-time travelers are accepted for this position
- Security is present overnight and onsite in the waiting area after clinic hours
- All RTO must be specified up front; requests for more than 7 days or covering holidays require special approval
- All candidates may be assigned to emergency response teams during hurricane season (June-November)
- A 60-mile radius rule applies for local candidates, who may be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Clinical modules must be completed pre-start, averaging 4 hours
- Active SC or compact RN license required (in hand or pending with proof of application for consideration)
- Minimum 2 years of observation and/or surgical nursing experience required
- Current AHA BLS and ACLS certifications
- Experience with Epic EMR preferred
- SSN and driver’s license required for consideration
- Former staff (including PRN) must be separated from the health system for 1 year before applying as a traveler
