Job Summary
The Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for evaluating and treating patients to improve functional independence and quality of life following illness, injury, or surgery in a hospital setting. The OT collaborates with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide patient-centered, evidence-based care across the acute and post-acute continuum.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Evaluate patients’ functional abilities related to activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), mobility, cognition, and upper extremity function
Develop, implement, and modify individualized treatment plans based on physician orders and patient needs
Provide therapeutic interventions focused on self-care, functional mobility, strength, coordination, balance, and cognitive-perceptual skills
Educate patients and caregivers on adaptive techniques, energy conservation, safety strategies, and use of adaptive equipment
Recommend and train patients in the use of assistive devices and durable medical equipment (DME)
Document evaluations, treatment sessions, progress notes, and discharge summaries in the electronic medical record
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, case management, and social work
Participate in discharge planning and provide recommendations for continued therapy services or appropriate levels of care
Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and professional best practices
Schedule & Work Environment
Shift: Day shift
Hours: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week
Setting: Inpatient hospital (acute care, ICU, med-surg, step-down, or mixed caseload)
Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program
Current state Occupational Therapist license (or eligibility)
NBCOT certification (or eligibility)
BLS/CPR certification (or ability to obtain)
Strong clinical assessment, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Previous hospital or acute care experience
Experience with post-surgical, neurological, orthopedic, or critical care populations
Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout patient care areas
Ability to assist with patient transfers, positioning, and therapeutic activities
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient assessment and documentation
