Unit Overview Department: Labor & Delivery Start Dates: 1/12, 1/19 (non-flexible) Radius Rule: 100 miles Unit Capacity L&D Beds: 9 OR Suites for C-Sections: 2 Triage Beds: 7 Average Births: 9/day 250/month 3,000/year Staffing & Ratios AWHONN Guidelines: Aim for 1:1 or 1:2; 2 patients is common. Charge Nurse: Yes, free charge. Nurse Aides/Techs: OB Techs available. Tele/Monitor Techs: Tele on unit; cardiac monitor tech on adult side; OB RNs do not read tele. OB/Neonatologist: In-house 24/7 Certifications Required Mandatory: BLS, NRP, AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Patient Population Gestation: 28 weeks and above Common Diagnoses: Hypertension (HTN), postpartum hemorrhage, antepartum complications Other Notes: 7-10% no prenatal care High Spanish-speaking population (Spanish-speaking skills preferred) Telemetry monitoring Skills & Experience Needed Core Skills: Vaginal exams (critical if from teaching facility) Scalp electrodes Circulating in C-section Newborn transitions & APGAR scoring Assist anesthesiology IV starts & blood draws Postpartum hemorrhage control (SIM lab fall 2023) Epidurals Amnio infusion Optional Knowledge: Water birth, spinning babies Drip Management: Yes, RNs titrate magnesium, Pitocin, insulin, blood Equipment & Systems RT Equipment: BVM (neonates), T-Piece resuscitator EFM System: CPN Centricity Shifts & Scheduling Shift Times: 6:45–7:15 am/pm Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts in 4-week schedule Night: Fri/Sat Day: Sat/Sun Holiday Requirement: Typically 2 out of 3 holidays (including eve/day); on-call as much as desired Call/Standby: Low census on-call Floating & Additional Requirements May float to NICU, Peds, Womens, MedSurg, ICU, or RDU with appropriate assignments Must be able to care for baby for 2 hours post-delivery Postpartum experience preferred; antepartum coverage required Orientation Scrub Color: Provided Orientation Shifts: One NEO One Clinical Ed/EPIC One Day Floor
