The Traveling Registered Nurse (RN) position is a part-time role supporting the CDC's NHANES project by conducting health examinations, overseeing quality assurance, and leading emergency response activities in mobile examination centers. The RN is responsible for patient care, biospecimen collection, and administrative tasks, requiring travel and flexibility in schedule. Candidates must hold an RN license, have at least 5 years of nursing experience, and be proficient in phlebotomy and CPR.

Traveling Registered Nurses are responsible for:
- Monitoring supplies and submitting requests for restocking
- Obtaining informed consent and/or providing instructions, counseling, or referral services.
- Collecting body, oscillometric and/or questionnaire measurements
- Serving as back up for conducting spirometry, vision or audiometry measurements
- Providing services to other staff as required to perform venipuncture on children and adult participants
- Overseeing quality assurance and quality control of exam activities
- Serving as lead for emergency response activities as well as Safety Officer for the MEC team
- Consulting with participants regarding any out-of-range preliminary results
- Reviewing laboratory results and provides referrals if needed following prescribed study protocol
- Following the prescribed study protocol and mandated infection control guidelines
- Overseeing the set up/pack up the examination room, including packing, unpacking, and storing light equipment and supplies
- Recording all collected data in the computerized applications
- Providing instruction to participants for self-collection of urine and swabs
- Attending project training, complete RTI required courses and certification by end of training
- Following all procedures in the Manual of Procedures
- Managing and maintain equipment, tablet, and supplies properly
- Providing all completed forms (e.g., consent forms, incentive receipts, timesheets) to supervisor, as requested
- This position involves lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
RTI International is seeking part time Traveling Registered Nurses on the NHANES Project
RTI International is hiring part-time Traveling Registered Nurses (RNs) to support the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NHANES conducts in-person household interviews and health examinations in a Mobile Examination Center (MEC) with participants recruited by field staff.
As the lead of a small MEC team of staff, the RN will oversee daily data collection operations, lead quality assurance activities, ensure communication with the project headquarters, and serve as the MEC safety officer. Responsibilities include administrative coordination, direct patient care, biospecimen collection, and emergency response leadership.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Nursing.
- At least 5 years of nursing experience in both direct patient care and supervisory roles.
- Current RN license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (one of the 50 states or District of Columbia).
- Successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
- Proficient in phlebotomy for all age groups, including infants.
- CPR certification (or willingness to obtain within 3 months).
- Strong communication skills, especially with children and parents.
- Flexibility in assigned work schedules and tasks is essential.
- Basic computer proficiency and clerical skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates:
- Must possess valid driver’s license
- In order to travel by air, federal law requires individuals to have a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative. This position may require the successful candidate to travel by air for business reasons. Accordingly, successful candidates must have, or be willing to obtain, a REAL ID, or TSA approved alternative
- This is a part-time position averaging 25 hours per week over the course of the data collection period.
- Overnight travel is required and while on travel the work schedule is typically 5 days and 40 hours per week.
- Work schedule on non-travel weeks will vary.
- Most work occurs between 7 AM and 7 PM, typically 5 days on and 2 days off based on the data collection schedule, with occasional evenings.
- Initial data collection period is expected to run through December 2026, with potential extension through 2030.
Traveling Registered Nurses are required to complete all trainings which include:
- Successfully passing project required training (a mix of virtual, online, and in-person).
- Virtual/online training completed prior to in-person training.
- Up to 80 hours of paid virtual/online training prior to in-person sessions.
- Mandatory in-person training in Research Triangle Park, NC (April 2025; dates may vary).
- Refresher and mid-year training required.
- Travel per diem and accommodations provided for in-person training.
