American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Ortho Trauma position in an acute Level 1 trauma setting, requiring a NE or compact license and at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities- Work in the Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit within an acute hospital setting
- Level 1 trauma center with a 55-bed unit
- 12-hour night shifts with every other weekend required
- Required to work 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year's
- Nurse to patient ratio is 1:5-6 with nurse aides (ratio 1:10-20)
- Typical patient population includes joint replacements, fractures, ortho trauma, sepsis, cellulitis, GI bleeds, pneumonia, COPD exacerbation, colon resections, prostatectomy, and failure to thrive
- RNs titrate heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips and use PCA pumps
- Epic EMR is used; experience preferred
- Unit is supported by charge nurses and monitor techs; RNs should have some telemetry awareness
- Floating required to other Med/Surg areas or units with Med/Surg patients
- RNs must pass a skills-based open-book exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%
- Focus on hourly rounding, responsiveness, and managing busy daily admissions and discharges
- Mechanical lifts provided in every other room
- Artificial nails are prohibited in patient care areas
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Culturally diverse patient population, including Spanish, Karen, and Burmese communities
- Two days of unit-specific orientation provided
- Requests for time off must be submitted up front (maximum 7 days per 13-week contract); additional requests are not approved
- Returning applicants may not have been employed by a CommonSpirit facility within the past year
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Active NE or compact state RN license required at time of application; pending licenses not accepted
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum of 2 years’ recent Med/Surg Ortho Trauma nursing experience required
- Driver’s license required to verify residence outside 50-mile radius
- Candidates may not be full time, part time, or PRN with any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility (including CHI or Dignity)
- Professional references: one supervisor from the past year and one peer or supervisor from the past 3 years
