American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 1 Neuro Acute/Epilepsy Monitoring unit, requiring recent trauma experience and strong critical thinking skills.
Responsibilities- Work within a hospital-based Neuro Acute/Epilepsy Monitoring unit specializing in med-surg and telemetry care
- Unit has 48 beds including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms
- Patient population includes epilepsy, brain tumor, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury, and neuro diagnoses
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4 for both days and nights
- 12-hour night shifts with self-scheduling and three weekend shifts required per four-week period
- Float may be required to med-surg and telemetry floors
- Specialized procedures include Trend EEGs and neuro assessments including cranial nerves
- Equipment includes telemetry monitors, Bipap (managed by RT), and self-releasing velcro seat belts
- Cerner EMR is used in this unit and experience is preferred
- Orientation includes 12 hours plus two floor-specific shifts
- Primary responsibilities include monitoring neuro patients, performing telemetry, and advanced neurological assessments
- Team support includes a charge nurse with no patient assignment, resource RN, and PCT staff
- RT and pharmacy available 24/7, SWAT RN for difficult IV access, and hospitalist/intensivist present during days
- Required to wear grey steel scrubs as per unit policy
- Must demonstrate strong skills in sterile technique, critical thinking, and the ability to detect subtle changes in patient condition
- Holiday shifts are rotated per unit needs
- Orientation involves passing both a SIMs lab and on-unit training
- Facial piercings are not permitted, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing, and natural hair color is required
- Active AZ or compact RN license required at time of consideration
- Minimum 2 years of recent RN experience in a Level 1 trauma or similar acute setting
- Current certifications: BLS and ACLS required; Med-Surg/Tele certification and BSN preferred
- Must pass a dysrhythmia (Relias) exam prior to acceptance, with two attempts allowed
- Ability to pass a sterile technique competency on day one for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from the last 12 months, one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years
- Driver’s license required for verification of address; must reside at least 50 miles from the facility
- May not have been employed by facilities associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity within the past year
