The Gastroenterology Physician provides specialized inpatient care for patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions, focusing on consultation, management, and procedural treatment within a hospital setting. This role requires an MD or DO with completed gastroenterology fellowship, board certification or eligibility, and the capability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Position Summary
The Gastroenterology Hospitalist provides inpatient-focused care for patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions. This role emphasizes hospital-based consultation, inpatient management, and procedural care while collaborating closely with hospitalists, surgeons, intensivists, and other specialists to ensure high-quality, coordinated patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Provide inpatient gastroenterology consultations and ongoing management for hospitalized patients
Evaluate, diagnose, and treat acute and complex gastrointestinal conditions, including GI bleeding, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and biliary disorders
Perform inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures as indicated
Manage pre- and post-procedure care, including monitoring for complications
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including internal medicine, surgery, critical care, radiology, and nursing
Interpret laboratory results, imaging studies, pathology reports, and endoscopic findings
Participate in inpatient rounding, handoffs, and care coordination
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and procedures
Document all patient encounters and procedures accurately and timely in the medical record
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical governance initiatives
Adhere to evidence-based clinical guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory standards
Qualifications
Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school
Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship
Board eligible or board certified in Gastroenterology
Active state medical license or eligibility for licensure
Strong clinical decision-making, procedural, and communication skills
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced inpatient environment
Work Environment
Inpatient hospital setting only
Schedule may include block scheduling, call coverage, nights, weekends, or holidays depending on service needs
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods during procedures and rounds
Manual dexterity for endoscopic and bedside procedures
Ability to move throughout hospital units and procedural areas
