American Traveler is seeking an experienced Med/Surg RN with orthopedic experience for a 40-bed OrthoGeneral Surgical unit, day shifts, and Epic charting.
Responsibilities- Work in a 40-bed OrthoGeneral Surgical unit within a Level III Trauma Center hospital
- Care for adult patients with general medical and orthopedic surgical needs, including total joint procedures and large abdominal surgeries
- Usual patient ratio is 1:4-5, assigned by acuity with occasional mixed COVID and non-COVID assignments
- Required to float to other Med/Surg units and ED Holding as needed
- 12-hour day shifts with varied weekend requirements based on unit needs
- Utilizes Epic for EMR documentation, as well as Alaris and Pyxis systems
- Centralized telemetry monitoring and 24/7 Hospitalist and Respiratory Therapy support
- Schedule is released in 3-week blocks, provided about 10 days in advance
- Responsibilities include care for patients with pneumonia, sepsis, CHF, COPD, AKI, DVT, PE, dialysis, COVID, and orthopedic conditions
- Procedures include epidurals, PCA, ketamine drips (training provided), IV antibiotics, dressing and drain management, wound vacs, PICO drains, colostomy takedowns, hemicolectomy, bowel resections, and urological procedures such as TURP
- Must document pain assessments before and after medication per hospital policy
- Support provided by CNAs, flex nurse, and free-floating charge nurse
- Unit receives 2 days of general hospital orientation and 1 day of unit-specific orientation
- Travelers required to complete and pass a telemetry competency prior to start
- First-time travelers will be considered if deemed a good fit for the unit
- Any color scrubs may be worn
- No phones permitted on the unit and breaks are required
- Active WA or compact RN license required; pending license considered with proof of application
- Minimum 2 years of recent Med/Surg RN experience required
- Prior orthopedic experience required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- Must pass a Rhythm Interpretation exam prior to start
- Epic charting experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may be considered with manager approval
- Day shift experience preferred; candidates without prior day shift experience require manager approval
