Job Summary

  • Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs.

  • Assists with providing safe, age-appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures.
  • Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study.
  • Responsible for performing various technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Able to independently perform job functions.
  • Sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patients for the procedure.


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Verifies proper clinician order for procedure.
  • Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  • Follows established procedures for the administration of contrast medias safely.
  • Ensures proper patient identification and correct right/left marker usage.
  • Reviews CT/radiographic images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
  • Responds to emergency situations and restocks crash cart and life-support equipment.
  • Assists other technologists across all modalities when needed.
  • Observes patient condition and evaluates when physician intervention is required.
  • Verifies patient identity using two unique identifiers per hospital policy.
  • Ensures patient privacy and comfort; maintains patient dignity throughout the exam.
  • Demonstrates competence in selecting appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies and techniques based on patient age.
  • Organizes schedule, time and priorities to ensure required activities are completed within designated timeframes.
  • Follows physicians' instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with power injector operation.
  • Uses critical thinking skills.
  • Dialogs with patient/family.
  • Asks clarifying questions.
  • Seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
  • Understands, demonstrates and documents preprocedural verification and Time-Out process when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates and understands pre- and post-procedural care.
  • Preps the patient for the procedure.
  • Demonstrates and understands sterile technique.
  • Maintains competency with venipuncture.


Equipment

  • Adjusts technique so that the patient receives the lowest possible ionizing radiation dose while maintaining image quality.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider for timely correction.
  • Cleans, disinfects and maintains equipment per infection control and department cleaning schedules.


Education and Communication

  • Clearly explains exam purpose using AIDET to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation.
  • Ensures patient questions, concerns or contraindications are addressed; notifies physician when unresolved.
  • Participates in orientation and training of departmental employees.
  • Provides preparatory instruction and explanation of procedures.
  • Documentation is concise, legible and uses precise terminology.
  • Reads email each scheduled workday and follows through with assignments.
  • Completes required departmental and system-wide education without prompting.


Quality Control

  • Consistently produces acceptable images as confirmed by radiologist feedback and quality audits.
  • Ensures equipment is fully operational before each use by checking calibration and deficiencies.
  • Sends completed studies to PACS immediately and prints CDs as needed.
  • Prints and scans teleradiography studies after hours when applicable.
  • Completes all studies in RIS prior to completing them in PACS.
  • Prints teleradiography log sheet and submits to Radiologist when applicable.


Operations

  • Restocks linens and supplies and maintains cleanliness and order in the department.
  • Transports and positions patients and assists them on and off the procedure table.
  • Performs patient charging activities on the day service is rendered.
  • Applies shielding, supportive and immobilization devices and equipment.
  • Willingly provides knowledge and assistance to others on request and as time allows.
  • Performs routine clerical and support duties to ensure continuity and quality of services.
  • Keeps supervisor informed and promptly reports potential problems.
  • Maintains productivity levels equal to coworker standards.
  • Operates all workstations associated with the CT department.
  • Pushes and retrieves images from the CT console to PACS.
  • Maintains Joint Commission and regulatory standards.
  • Takes call when necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work and code of conduct.


Required Minimum Education

  • Accredited Program Radiologic Technology - Required


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

(All required upon hire unless otherwise stated)

  • ARRT-R Radiography
  • ARRT-CT Computed Tomography
  • BLS or ARC-BLS or BLS-Instructor


Required Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 1 year experience in Radiology - Required
  • Less than 1 year experience in CT - Preferred
