Job Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Night Shift Med/Surg position on a Surgical Acute unit, requiring an active IL RN license and BLS certification.

Responsibilities

• Work in the Surgical Acute (Med/Surg) unit of an acute care hospital
• Patient population includes post-op surgical, trauma, overflow medical patients requiring wound care, pain management, and IV therapy
• The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private rooms and 9 observation beds
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 4-5 patients per RN on days and 5-6 patients per RN on nights
• Some patients require telemetry monitoring; central station with monitor techs and Phillips monitors are used
• RNs use EPIC for charting
• 12-hour night shifts, 3 shifts per week (1900-0730), with every other weekend and rotating holiday coverage required
• Travelers are the first to float to units with similar patient populations
• Primary duties include post-op care, wound assessment, IV therapy, pain management, and drain/NG management
• Charge RNs are scheduled on every shift and do not take patient assignments; house supervisor is available 24/7
• Patient Care Techs support the team, assisting with vitals, ADLs, and ambulation
• Unit orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and one shift focused on EPIC and professional orientation
• Any color scrubs may be worn
• COVID-19 vaccination is not required by the facility
• No call or standby required
• Local candidates are accepted, with local rates applying to those living within 50 miles of the facility
• Block scheduling may be considered if requested at the time of contract

Requirements

• Active IL RN license in hand at the time of consideration
• Current BLS certification from AHA
• At least 1 year of recent Med/Surg nursing experience
• Proficiency with EPIC EMR preferred
• Strong post-op patient care and wound management skills required
• Demonstrated critical thinking and teamwork abilities
