5 North/Step-down is a 20-bed (all private room) unit. We strive for a 4:1 ratio but can have a 5:1 ratio, depending on our staffing situation. We have a mixture of pulmonary (pneumonia, COPD, BiPAP/cpap, etc.), cardiac (a-fib, heart failure, etc.), neuro (stroke), GI (bleed), and surgery patients who are stable with a higher risk of becoming unstable. Our unit is equipped to house 20 stepdown patients at one time, however, all patients do not have to be step-down in order to be on our unit. We accept patients who do not require invasive monitoring. There may be a combination of adult med-surg, telemetry, and step-down patients at any given time, based upon bed availability house wide. Examples of critical drips we can administer to our step-down patients: Amiodarone, Esmolol, Insulin, Lasix, Cardizem, and Nitroglycerin.
