Unit Notes – ICU (MICU/SICU) Required Background Must have experience in a Level I or Level II Trauma Center Must have worked in a hospital with 300+ beds Unit Details Unit: ICU – 2nd Floor (MICU with some SICU) Number of Beds: 16 Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2 Required Certifications BLS ACLS NIHSS Common Diagnoses / Patient Population CRRT (Prismaflex) Rotaprone therapy Targeted Temperature Management (Arctic Sun) Mass Transfusion Protocol (MTP) Train-of-Four monitoring; frequent paralytics ECMO (occasionally) Continuous 24-hour EEG monitoring EVD and lumbar drains Neurosurgical patients Trauma (drownings, tractor rollovers, fractures, MVAs) Spinal injuries Sepsis, DKA Post-operative recoveries COVID Post–heart cath patients (may pull sheaths) SI patients Bedside procedures: trachs, chest tube insertions, bronchoscopy, arterial line insertion Organ recovery cases (procurement only; no transplants performed) Required / Preferred Experience Level II trauma experience or higher required CRRT experience highly preferred Experience pulling arterial/venous sheaths preferred Drips & Medications RNs are required to titrate drips Common drips include: Precedex Vasopressors Antiarrhythmics Sedation Standard ICU infusions Staffing & Support Charge Nurse: Day shift: typically a “Blessing” staff nurse Night shift: may be House Supervisor Charge takes a smaller assignment to assist staff Nurse Aides: Yes Intensivist/Hospitalist Coverage: 24/7 (MD & NP) Respiratory Therapy: RT assigned to ICU/PCU 24/7 Full respiratory equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, etc.) Telemetry Dedicated telemetry monitor technician RNs interpret their own strips Monitor Brand: Draeger Scheduling Shifts: 3 × 12-hour shifts (7:00 start) Self-scheduling: Not guaranteed Block scheduling: Not guaranteed (discuss with leadership) Schedule Posted: 6 weeks in advance Weekend & Holiday Requirements Weekends: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday) Holidays: Rotational with core staff Call / Floating Call/Standby: None Floating: Rare May float to PCU or CVICU Could take patients, but typically functions as help-all Dress Code Scrub Color: Black Orientation Unit Orientation: 1 × 12-hour shift on the shift and unit of hire First Day: 12–14 hours Competencies, computer-based learning, and general orientation
