American Traveler seeks an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg Ortho Trauma night shift assignment in an acute Level 1 trauma setting requiring a NE or compact RN license and BLS.
Responsibilities- Position is based in an acute care hospital on a 55-bed Med/Surg Ortho Trauma unit
- Typical patient diagnoses include joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, and failure to thrive
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is generally 1:5-6
- RN is responsible for titrating heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine drips; PCA pumps are commonly used
- Tele techs are available to interpret, but RNs must have basic telemetry awareness
- EPIC is the EMR; experience is preferred but not required
- Scheduled for 12-hour nights with every other weekend and 2-3 holidays required from Thanksgiving to New Year's
- Floating to other Med/Surg units may be required
- Navy blue scrubs are required
- Two days of unit-specific orientation provided
- Unit emphasizes hourly rounding, responsiveness, teamwork, and patient-centered care
- Frequent admissions and discharges require strong organizational skills and adaptability
- Mechanical lifts are available in every other room for safe patient handling
- Support staff includes a charge nurse each shift, patient care techs (1:10-20), and unit clerks
- Serves a diverse patient population, including those speaking Spanish, Karen, and Burmese
- First time travelers are eligible
- Requested time off (RTO) must be submitted upfront, limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; no additional RTO will be approved
- Candidates must live more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Active NE or compact RN license required at time of consideration (pending not accepted)
- Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care Med/Surg experience required
- Current BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
- Ability to pass an open-book skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90%
- Driver's license required for verification of residence outside a 50-mile radius
- Must have not held full time, part time, or PRN employment with any CommonSpirit facility (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas
