Description

The purpose of this position is to administer all election activities with integrity, accuracy, and in compliance with the Code of Virginia, state, and federal election laws, directives, policies and procedures of the Virginia State Board of Election. This is accomplished by providing excellent customer service to registered voters, callers and walk-in visitors; assisting and assuming duties of General Registrar and part-time Assistant Deputy Registrar when necessary; assisting in all office and city operations related to administration of elections; notifying any affected voter of any election district, precinct, or polling place changes. Other duties include advising candidates on the filing regulations; maintaining campaign financial records and how to get properly certified; carrying out duties prescribed by the Electoral Board; and maintaining, testing and programming the electronic voting machines and electronic poll books. Serves as the Deputy to the Director of Elections/General Registrar. Work is performed independently with oversight by the General Registrar.

  • Must be a resident and registered to vote in Virginia.
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds frequently with pushing/pulling, reaching, handling and twisting.
  • Must be available to work early morning, late evening, on weekends, and some holidays during peak election periods.
  • Knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office and basic office equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to learn federal, state, and local political structures, laws, and policies related to election administration and voter registration including the ability to adapt to the constant changes in laws and policies.
  • Problem-solving skills including the ability to gather necessary information to solve problems, and respond to complex questions from other employees, City officials, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow technical instruction for programming, operating, testing, and troubleshooting voting equipment.
  • Assists with the management of federal, state, and local elections, including equipment preparation and testing, equipment delivery, and precinct logistics.
  • Coordinates a collaborative effort between the office, Information Technology department, and vendors to conduct security maintenance and implement necessary upgrades.
  • Programs voting machines and electronic pollbooks and coordinates and conducts Logic and Accuracy testing for voting machines and pollbooks.
