Position Overview:

The Excavator Operator – Crew Leader is responsible for leading residential excavation jobs related to sewer, water, and gas line repairs or installations. This is a hands-on leadership role operating heavy equipment, managing an on-site dig crew, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to customer expectations.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of a backhoe operator:

  • Operate backhoe and excavation equipment for sewer, water, and gas line repairs or new installations

  • Break and remove concrete and prepare job sites for excavation

  • Assist plumbing technicians during on-site repairs and installations

  • Remove old sewer lines and verify proper line flow before job completion

  • Backfill excavated areas and restore job sites, including cleanup and seeding as required

  • Lead and manage the on-site dig crew to ensure work is completed to scope and quality standards

  • Obtain customer approvals for work performed and completed

  • Maintain, fuel, and stock the service vehicle and equipment

  • Transport equipment, materials, and tools; track tool usage and inventory

  • Complete required job documentation and process customer payments when applicable

Qualifications:

Requirements of a backhoe operator:

  • Heavy equipment operation experience or equivalent training

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred

  • Strong communication and customer service skills

  • Ability to work safely, efficiently, and independently on active job sites

  • Leadership experience managing crews preferred
