Job Summary and Responsibilities
Position Overview:

The Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner (NP) will play a key role in delivering care to the adult inpatient oncology and hematology patient population at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Reporting to the Cancer Institute Administrator, the NP will collaborate closely with a team of oncology physicians and advanced practice providers to provide comprehensive care to patients from initial diagnosis through treatment, management of complications, and palliative care.

This position primarily focuses on inpatient oncology and hematology care, with potential opportunities for rotating between inpatient and outpatient settings for candidates with relevant certifications (Family Nurse Practitioner and/or Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner). The NP will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of cancer care, including patient assessment, treatment planning, and care coordination.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Care: Provide comprehensive assessments for adult inpatient oncology and hematology patients, including history and physical exams, diagnostic study orders and interpretation, and formulation of treatment plans in collaboration with attending physicians.

  • Treatment Management: Prescribe appropriate treatments, medications, and therapies in accordance with established protocols and in collaboration with the attending oncologist.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, specialists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare team members to ensure seamless, holistic care for patients.

  • Acute Medical Management: Manage complications and acute medical issues related to cancer treatment, including toxicities, infections, and palliative care needs.

  • Palliative and End-of-Life Care: Provide compassionate palliative care, including symptom management and end-of-life care coordination, as appropriate.

  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about cancer treatments, side effects, self-management strategies, and advance care planning.

  • Consultation and Communication: Consult with specialty physicians regarding changes in patient condition, diagnostic results, and treatment recommendations.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring comprehensive documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and follow-up care.


Job Requirements

Education:

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing, with a certification as a Nurse Practitioner (Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner).
  • Licensure: Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of Arizona.
  • Hematology/oncology experience required either as a NP or as a nurse.

Preferred:

  • OCN or AOCNP preferred, but not required

Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong clinical knowledge in the management of hematologic and oncologic conditions, both malignant and benign.

  • Ability to assess, diagnose, and formulate individualized treatment plans in collaboration with attending oncologists and specialists.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

  • Proficiency in the interpretation of diagnostic studies (labs, imaging) and the management of complex medical conditions.

  • Compassionate approach to palliative and end-of-life care.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
