The Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) provides high-quality, compassionate, and efficient care to patients of all ages presenting with urgent, emergent, or life-threatening conditions. The ER RN uses advanced critical thinking, assessment, and clinical judgment to stabilize patients, implement care plans, and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure the best possible outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesPatient Assessment & Triage
- Perform rapid, focused, and comprehensive assessments of patients upon arrival.
- Triage patients according to acuity, utilizing established protocols and clinical judgment.
- Recognize life-threatening conditions and initiate emergency interventions promptly.
Direct Patient Care
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and emergency treatments per physician orders and protocols.
- Monitor and interpret vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygen saturation, and neurological status.
- Assist with and perform emergency procedures such as CPR, defibrillation, wound care, splinting, IV access, and catheterization.
- Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, imaging, or transfer to higher levels of care.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and multidisciplinary team members to coordinate care.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing education, reassurance, and emotional support.
- Document all assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
Crisis & Trauma Response
- Respond to trauma alerts, cardiac arrests, stroke activations, and disaster situations.
- Operate specialized emergency equipment including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and rapid infusers.
- Follow evidence-based practices and hospital protocols for resuscitation, sepsis, stroke, and cardiac care.
Professional Practice
- Maintain knowledge of emergency nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in continuing education, mock codes, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Serve as a preceptor or mentor for new nurses and nursing students as needed.
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
Licensure/Certification:
- Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications (required).
Experience:
- Minimum of 1–2 years of recent acute care nursing experience, preferably in Emergency, Critical Care, or Step-Down (required).
- Experience in a trauma center or high-acuity setting (preferred).
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to prioritize rapidly and manage multiple complex patients simultaneously.
- Proficiency in emergency procedures, cardiac monitoring, and rapid response.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills with diverse populations.
- Emotional resilience and ability to function under stress.
