The Registered Nurse (RN) provides clinical care in an acute inpatient surgical trauma unit, managing patient assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation while following safety and regulatory standards. The role involves patient-centered care for adults with traumatic injuries, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies. Candidates must hold RN licensure, have experience or residency in nursing, and demonstrate knowledge of trauma care, quality improvement, and safety protocols.

Job Summary
Provides clinical direction for all aspects of patient care in an acute inpatient setting, fostering patient/family centered care. Demonstrates clinical competency utilizing evidence-based practices/research in all areas of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and outcomes. Incorporates knowledge of safety protocols, cost containment and quality improvement throughout the nursing process. Identifies patient, unit and organizational priorities and incorporates into the nursing process. Adheres to all compliance and policy/procedures of the organization including, but not limited to licensure renewal, assigned training, employee health screenings, time and attendance policy, dress code policy, patient confidentiality, infection control, medication administration. Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory agency requirements (TJC, SC DPH, CMS). Provides care within the scope of the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act. The acute inpatient setting may require staff to be scheduled for a weekend, holiday, and on-call work.Bonus Eligible

Prisma Health Richland Hospital 7 East Surgical Trauma Unit
A regional academic medical center and hospital with more than 125 years of service to Columbia, Prisma Health Richland Hospital provides a wide range of primary and specialty healthcare services. Our Trauma Center is the only Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center in the Midlands.
A 30-bed medical surgical unit primarily geared towards adult patients requiring care after experiencing traumatic injury typically requiring surgical intervention. The standard nurse to patient ratio is 1:4 flexing up to 1:5 as needed. The unit is equipped with telemetry monitoring for up to 7 patients. Our patients are hemodynamically stable. Examples of these patients include those with injuries related to gunshot wounds or other penetrating injury, assaults, motor vehicle crashes, and falls. Four rooms are equipped to be used as "Safety Suites." These four rooms are for the care of the traumatic brain injury patient and are semi-private and closely monitored.
Essential Functions

Collects patient data and completes required forms with appropriate responses according to unit standards; identifies patient's problems/needs and sets priorities; identifies problems requiring further referral and/or follow-up; interprets and records latest diagnostic results; performs nursing assessment using critical thinking skills.
Develops a plan of care based on nursing process and which incorporates the plans of other disciplines and continuing care needs; includes the patient/family in developing or revising the plan of care; makes referrals to multidisciplinary support services.
Implementing/Managing Care: Care provided conforms to accepted practice standards; provides treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards; demonstrates understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served; explains nursing procedures; provides discharge teaching; identifies emergency situations and independently initiates advanced therapy; acts as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel and evaluates patient care measures instituted; understands and demonstrates respect for patient rights and utilizes established mechanisms for management of ethical issues in patient care.
Records patient care delivered as planned and any variation, with appropriate rationale; makes and records observations related to impending or associated problems; implements nursing measures related to impending or associated problems.
Using nursing process, delegates nursing care to appropriate personnel; integrates cost effective measures into nursing practice; recognizes unit problems and takes responsibility for documenting same; demonstrates active participation in QI processes; complies with hospital expectations to meet staffing demands based on patient care needs; complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; monitors unsafe working conditions; recognizes inappropriate and/or ineffective patient care management, resolves issue/problem and completes written reports; fulfills call for unit as assigned and adjusts staffing for census (volume) and acuity.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.
Minimum Requirements
Education - Associate degree in Nursing. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
Experience - One (1) year experience as a registered nurse.
In Lieu Of
In lieu of one (1) year of registered nurse experience, will accept successful completion of the Prisma Health Nurse Residency Program or successful completion of a comparable residency from another organization.
In lieu of one (1) year of registered nurse experience, will accept 1 year of licensed practical nurse (LPN) experience for internal candidates within the same service line.
In lieu of Associate degree in nursing, will accept nursing diploma with licensure to practice as a registered nurse.
