50 mile radius rule - ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE A COPY OF CANDIDATE'S UNEXPIRED DRIVER'S LICENSE Unit/Department MedSurg/Tele Float Pool What units are included in the float pool How many beds are on your unit, suites, labs, etc. Are they all private rooms? Anything else specific The most frequent units they will float to are 6N (36 beds) & 7N (29 beds). Other units: 4N (36 beds), 5S (36 beds), 6S (36 beds), & Critical Care (20 beds) Nurse:Patient Ratios What are your nursing ratios? Mainly 1:5-6 for both days & nights on most units (once or twice a month could have 7 patients toward the end of the shift). Depends on acuity of patients. Required Certifications (i.e., BLS, ACLS?) "What certifications are required for your floor? Ex: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS" BLS & ACLS are Required Common diagnoses/Types of patients "What are common diagnosises or types of patients that you care for on your unit or in your department? " CHF, Cardiac cath, CP, pneumonia, chronic renal disease, COPD, Ortho, & Oncology (perm staff will administer chemo) Experience or 'Must have' skills "Please indicate any experience that travelers absolutely MUST have experience with to work on your unit? Is there any experience you prefer travelers to have, but are okay if they don't have the experience? Are you okay with first time travelers?" All travelers must take & pass a cardiac rhythm exam. They feel that an RN with ACLS should easily be able to pass this. Are RNs required to titrate drips? "Do you titrate any drips on your unit (Heparin, insulin, nitro, etc)? Does your unit take any set rate cardiac gtts (amio, dopamine, dobutamine, etc.)?" Will not have to titrate drips. Common titratable &/or set rate drips "What drips do you titrate? What drips are set rate? " Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment? "Is there a charge nurse, lead, or supervisor available 24/7? Do they take a patient assignment? Is there a House Supervisor in house 24/7?" Yes - Every unit has a charge nurse. Day charge does not take patients, Night charge does take patients Are there nurse aids on this unit/Ratios "Do you use CNAs, PCT, or Techs? What are their ratios? What are their typical job duties? Can they take blood sugars?" Yes - all units use CNAs RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc) "Is RT directly available or designated to your unit? Do you have Bipap, Cpap, or High Flow, vents, or trachs on your unit? Are nurses expected to manage respiratory equipment? Do RN or RTs administered respirtory treatments (breathing treatments, inhalers, etc)?" CPAP & BiPap only - RT manages Is there tele on this unit? Monitor Techs? RNs read strips? "Do you have telemetry on your unit or in your department? What brand are the monitors? Do nurses have to read & interpret strips? Do you have monitor techs? " Phillips - Most units have monitor techs but RN's must be able to read & interpret strips Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?) "What are your shift hours? 7-7? Do you utilize self scheduling or is it done by the manager or scheduler? Do you allow block scheduling? How far out do you make the schedule? 4 or 6 weeks at a time?" 12 hour shifts 7a - 7p; 7p - 7a Weekend Requirements "What is your weekend requirement? How many weekends or weekend shifts are traverlers required to work? Every other? What are you weekend shifts, example Days- Sat/Sun or Nights- Sat/Fri? " Every-other-weekend. Sat/Sun for both Days/Nights Holiday Requirements "Do you require travelers to work holidays? Do you work them into the perm staff rotation schedule?" Work in the holiday rotation schedule with perm staff Is there a call or standby requirement? "If call or standby call is required, how often does it happen? Do all staff rotate through a call schedule or sign up?" How are units assigned? i.e. via text message, daily sheet assignments, set schedule? "What units do staff typically float to? Are travelers the first to float? Do you cap ratios when necessary? For example: If an ICU RN is required to float to a lower acuity unit, are they expected to take a full patent load or capped at a ratio of 1:4?" Float Pool RN's will report to the clinical coordinator's office prior to shift start time for unit assignment. RN's could float to all 6 units but will most likely be assigned a 'parent unit' & will only be assigned very basic telemetry patients, within their scope of practice. They must be able to read & interpret strips but will not have to titrate drips. Scrub Color/Dress Code "What are your dress code requirements? Do you have designated scrub colors for different specialties? What color scrubs do RNs wear? What color do CNAs wear? " Royal Blue Unit/Department specific orientation How many shifts of orientation do the travelers get on the unit (in the department) with a preceptor? 1-2 Shifts with a preceptor Additional Notes Is there anything unique about your unit, facility, or area that you like to tell
